Non-dual Counseling

"Investigate what you think of as your'self.' This is the purpose, the meaning of all spirituality, of all seeking, of your very being; to understand this amazing intricate play of Consciousness by seeing what is this illusion, this mistaken perception, and what is its source which makes it possible."

-- David Carse, Perfect Brilliant Stillness

Who is this type of counseling for?

This is for those who sense they've reached the end of the path of fixing and improving--those who feel called to look beyond the story of themselves, even if it feels unsettling.

Non-dual counseling is less a method of counseling and more a way of understanding human experience, similar to existential counseling. Rather than focusing solely on changing thoughts, emotions, or behaviors, it invites a deeper inquiry into the nature of self, awareness, and unsatisfactoriness in life.

Many people experience periods of deep psychological, existential, or spiritual transformation. This page is intended to reassure you that such experiences can be explored safely and thoughtfully in counseling without being prematurely pathologized (e.g., Suzanne Segal's experience, shared in her book Collision with the Infinite). However, we will still work together to ensure that there aren't underlying psychological issues that could best be addressed through western psychological means.

"Non-duality is not an immunization against feeling. In fact, it is the opposite: it is unconditional openness, sensitivity, vulnerability and possibility."

- Rupert Spira

"Once upon a time, I dreamt

I was a Butterly, flittering

hither and thither, to all

intents and purposes a butterfly

...suddenly I awoke...Now

I do not know whether I was

then a man, dreaming I

was a Butterly, or whether

I am now a Butterly, dreaming

I am a man."

-Zhuangzi

"There is a Presence that is unnameable

which thought cannot touch.

It is not your possession; it is what you are."

-Adyashanti

"Don't pretend to be what you are not,

don't refuse to be what you are."

-Nisargadatta Maharaj

"If you can sit quietly after difficult news; if in financial downturns you remain perfectly calm; if you can see your neighbors travel to fantastic places without a twinge of jealousy; if you can happily eat whatever is put on your plate; you can fall asleep after a day of running around without a drink or a pill; if you can always find contentment just where you are...you are probably a dog."
